Marta asked whether I would be writing on the weekend. The answer (as you can see) is yes, but I’ve decided to give myself the weekend off from analysis. So only three sections today.
Today’s links
If you’re riding bike around, you should leave more than 2 metres between you and the bike in front of you. This link explains why.
After spending a bit of time yesterday in NSW’s statistics, here’s Victoria’s – much prettier than NSW, but NSW has more information now. And New Zealand, which I am following closely also.
Life Glimpses
Luckily this story ended well, but when Geekinsydney tried to make us a second cup of coffee this morning, the coffee machine turned itself off and wouldn’t turn back on again. Even more ominously, nothing else attached to that powerpoint was working either. Not only would it not turn on, but it was stuck in a position that meant we couldn’t open the various chambers to see what was going on. We were looking down the barrel of lockdown without coffee! But in with some crafty googling and judicious use of the toolbox, it’s now working again. Coffee is still available!
This afternoon I went for a bike ride around Sydney – a ride I’ve been doing around various bits of foreshore for more than 20 years. I used to amuse myself by counting the weddings, if I did it on a Saturday afternoon (my personal best was 11). Today I was simultaneously enjoying the lack of pedestrians (I’ve never ridden along Circular Quay next to the Toaster before – I’ve always had to walk my bike) and obsessing about social distancing (check out my link above). There were a lot of people out and about, and pretty much everyone was by themselves or with a group of 2-3 people, more than 2 metres away from anyone else. But if you’re walking along a path, you still have to get quite close to someone walking in the other direction. While there were a lot more masks than normal, it was probably still only 10% of the people I saw.
In a bonus, I did see a wedding, just the one – at the Garrison Church in the Rocks. I rode past just as they were taking their vows. The priest, bride and groom and one bridesmaid and groomsman were standing by the church door and there were 10 or so people standing outside the gate taking pictures (in little clusters so they weren’t too close to each other).
Bit of Beauty
It’s hard to decide which picture to use today, so I think you’ll get another one from this ride tomorrow. Today’s is the Opera House taken from the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Last time I was there there was a cruise ship in (luckily not the Ruby Princess) so I couldn’t get to the point where I took this shot. I highly recommend the process of trying to find a bit of beauty every day. Looking for a good shot for this blog has made me much more appreciative of the beauty around me.
After reading your coffee problems, had a cup if instant coffee, boiling water provided by the
electrical kettle, not as good as yours. but simple. Went riding with you in Circular Quay, but
kept the right distance The Opera House looks great. Here there are very few people in the street. I do see some runners though.
The thing of beauty is a little plant on the table in the balcony (I do not know the name) it has lovely
red flowers, its doing its best to make me happy, green leaves all over, at least twice a day an
inspection. Love
I’m really enjoying your articles Jennifer. Thank you.
